99-year-old war veteran Captain Tom Moore set himself a target of raising £1,000 for the NHS by walking 100 lengths of his 25m garden in Bedfordshire before he turns 100 years old at the end of the month.
In just one week, Captain Moore has smashed his fundraising target, so far raising more than £12 million for NHS Charities Together.
Captain Moore’s campaign page on JustGiving has received donations by more than 633,000 people. A tweet posted on the Captain’s Twitter account on Thursday read:
“Thank you so much to everyone who made this morning the most amazing and wonderful experience.”
Mr Moore trained as a civil engineer before enlisting in the army for the Second World War. He rose to the position of captain and served in India and Burma.
The walk, which Mr Moore finished on Thursday morning, is raising money for NHS Charities Together, a collective group representing and supporting the work of the NHS’ official charities. Having smashed his target and completing 100 laps, it is understood that the Captain will continue walking around his garden as donations keep pouring in.
Speaking on BBC News on Wednesday, Captain Moore described it is as ‘completely out of this world’ after he found out that he had raised over £5 million.
The donation page on JustGiving has been hit with large surges of people trying to donate to the cause, receiving donations worth over £6 million in just 24 hours. In a tweet, JustGiving said ‘We’re seeing record numbers of people on the website right now, but you’ll get through.’
