The Speaker is committed to inspiring and empowering the next generation.

SpeakerPolitics Limited is a forward-thinking and youth-driven non-profit media organisation on a mission to inspire the next generation in politics. Through understandable, impartial and explanatory political news coverage, The Speaker reaches ever-growing audiences across the UK and beyond. This page sets out how we empower young people and our commitment to doing so through the Power of Youth charter.

We're a signatory of the Power of Youth charter

SpeakerPolitics Limited believes that all children and young people should be empowered to make a positive difference on the issues that affect their lives, their communities and broader society. We therefore adopt this Charter, committing to growing the power of youth in the following areas;

Through our educational resources, we will continue to help young people to understand ways to get involved in social and political action projects and we will expand our focus on this in future educational content.

  • SpeakerPolitics Limited is a forward-thinking and youth-driven non-profit media company. While also reaching a range of other audiences, young people are at the focus of our mission – to inspire the next generation in politics. We are driven by young people, for young people.

  • We offer a variety of opportunities for young people and those from disadvantaged backgrounds to make their voices heard, both through providing writing opportunities and sharing opportunities available elsewhere.

  • In previous recruitment processes, The Speaker has encouraged applications from young people from disadvantaged and minority backgrounds – this is a process which we will continue in the future if we recruit individuals or run initiatives where this could be relevant.

  • Through our education initiatives, we work with a variety of organisations to empower young people from different backgrounds to learn more about politics, social action and making their voices heard.

  • We will continue to engage with youth-focused organisations to drive forward our mission in inspiring the next generation in politics, and look to expand such engagements where possible.

  • Our education section and initiatives explain the benefits of political and social action and detail opportunities for young people to get involved.

  • We will share more stories of our impact in empowering young people.

  • Young people are often featured in The Speaker’s Good News and Inspiring Stories section, raising awareness of the often inspirational activities of young people to support change in their communities.

  • We will target the expansion of this section, making it a more regular feature in the future.

  • We will use features on our platform and any events we hold to recognise and celebrate the positive impact of contributors to our work.

We’re serious about promoting and committing to the Power of Youth. Signing the Power of Youth charter is a public commitment to meaningful action and empowering more children and young people to be active citizens. You can find out more about the Power of Youth Charter on the iwill website.

Social impact is at the heart of everything we do

The Speaker was setup in the classroom on a mission to inspire the next generation in politics. Politics impacts all of us everyday, so its vital that everyone can understand politics, how it works and how to get involved. This socially-focused mission has always been at the heart of everything we do as an organisation. The Speaker is impartial, designed to be accessible and driven by young people, for young people. Our team comes from a range of backgrounds, all with different ambitions, but brought together by our mission.

Since being founded in 2018, we’ve created informing and inspiring content that has been seen millions of times in over 130 countries around the world. Our team has delivered inspiring talks to over a thousand young people across the UK. We’ve helped aspiring journalists gain valuable experience, we’ve worked with some of the UK’s largest youth movements and we’ve helped many people make their voices heard. We’ve explained key political issues to the nation on radio, we’ve been among the first to report some of the biggest breaking news stories and we’ve brought you exclusive interviews providing insight into some of the people doing their bit to shape our world.

In 2022, we transitioned to the legal status of a non-profit and relaunched to strengthen our commitment to our social mission. We’re now increasingly writer-led to ensure we best serve our primary audiences of young people, and focus less on breaking news to deliver more understandable, explanatory and inspiring content.
