Donald Trump has left the White House for the final time as the 45th President of the United States.
Mr Trump flew to Joint Base Andrews in Maryland earlier today after departing the White House. There, he delivered a final speech in which he said it had been “a great honour to be your president”.
The President vowed to be “back in some form”, but also wished “the new administration great luck and success”.
In what have been described as surreal closing remarks at Joint Base Andrews, Mr Trump said “So, have a good life. We will see you soon”, before leaving the stage to the sound of YMCA, which has been used as a theme song by Trump before. Mr Trump then boarded Air Force One to fly to his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida.
Mr Trump will not attend the inauguration of Joe Biden, however, current Vice-President Mike Pence will be in attendance. Mr Trump will become the first outgoing President not to attend his successor’s inauguration since Andrew Johnson did not attend the ceremony for Ulysses S Grant in 1869.
It is understood that Mr Trump kept to the tradition of leaving a letter for the new President, however, its contents are currently unknown.
There is particularly high security in Washington ahead of the inauguration, following the storming of the Capitol earlier this month by Trump supporters.
Joe Biden will become the 46th President of the United States later, with him due to take the oath of office around 12pm local time (5pm GMT).
