Tokyo 2020 Olympics to be postponed until 2021, says IOC member

The 2020 Olympic Games will be postponed by one year due to the COVID-19 Coronavirus pandemic, Dick Pound, a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has said.

Speaking to USA Today, Mr Pound said;

“On the basis of the information the IOC has, postponement has been decided,”

“The parametres going forward have not been determined, but the Games are not going to start on 24 July, that much I know.”

The games had been due to start on 24 July in Tokyo, but Australia and Canada had already said they would not compete. Great Britain had indicated they were unlikely to attend due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

An official statement from the IOC is expected in due course.

It is understood that postponing the tournament is an option on the table, but cancellation is not.
