Claiming their disappointment about the new Brexit deal, Shailesh Vera, Dominic Raab, Esther McVey and Suella Braverman quitted the government. The public is afraid about a non-agreement between the United Kingdom and the European Union in March 2019 (Brexit deadline). Police forces are preparing themselves for the worst case scenario.
According to the member of the Welsh and English Police Federation Simon Kempton, the worst case would involve violence in Northern Ireland, rationing and extreme policing.
Since borders crossing should become really complicated, this could lead to disorder and important delays. This implies rationing about food but not only: petrol for example or medicines. Panic buying should be expected such as riots.
About Northern Ireland, the question of the boundaries’ policy should challenge the government but also police forces. It should also involve violent debate in public opinion.
Simon Kempton said “We don’t have any slack at all now. In fact, we don’t have enough resources to do day-to-day policing, so if we have various seats of disturbance then that’s a huge issue that we have to plan for.” He talks about making involved the military.
Theresa May, however, reaffirmed on Wednesday that the Brexit deal found would be the one used on March and will not be renegotiated.
