Former UKIP leader Nigel Farage launched the Brexit Party on Friday in a bid to reignite his political career and deliver on the 2016 referendum result.
It has announced several candidates, including Jacob Rees-Mogg’s sister Annunziata Rees-Mogg.
The party dedicated to leaving the European Union say that Brexit is being “betrayed” and that “it’s time to change politics for good”.
Their current aim is to stand in the European elections on May 23, but they believe this is just the “beginning of what is needed in this country”.
In the Brexit Party’s promotional video they suggest the party is not about left or right but about getting the nation’s voices heard.
It seems the party already has significant support with a rally being held this afternoon (Saturday) and £750,000 already having been raised just 10 days before the party was even established.
A significant candidate for the Brexit Party is Annunziata Rees-Mogg, a freelance journalist, who has previously attempted to become a Conservative MP since becoming a member in 1984 and said her decision to now leave the Tories did not come lightly.
She said: “politicians are not our masters, they are to do our bidding”, believing the Brexit Party must “rescue our democracy”.
Also agreeing with Annunziata is the more controversial sibling Jacob, who reiterated on Friday’s LBC show that he agreed with his sister’s objective to deliver on what was voted in 2016 – but that there was a different way to go about it.
Jacob Rees-Mogg said: “I will remain in the Tory party, I think that’s going to be the best way to do it”.
The current leader of UKIP, Gerard Batten MEP, tweeted in response to the party launch suggesting Farage only had self-interests at heart – rather than the will of the British people.
He tweeted: “Farage’s party is just a vehicle for him…Its only purpose is to re-elect him”.
