Liz Truss resigns as Prime Minister after just 44 days in office

Liz Truss has become the shortest-serving Prime Minister in UK history, resigning after just 44 days in office.

Truss announced her resignation outside 10 Downing Street on Thursday lunchtime, saying she recongised she “cannot deliver the mandate” on which she had been elected by Conservative party members.

The PM’s resignation follows weeks of economic chaos, caused in large part by the mini-budget that was announced last month that has since largely been reversed.

The Conservative Party is set to hold a leadership election “within the next week”, though exact details of this are unclear.
