Leaked plan on Irish border rejected by Boris Johnson

Boris Johnson could present detailed Brexit proposals to Brussels in the next few days, it is believed.

It has been reported that the UK Prime Minister will offer his proposal for a Brexit deal to the EU after this week’s Conservative Party conference, which is due to conclude in Manchester of Wednesday.

According to Irish broadcaster RTE, Mr Johnson’s plan to replace the backstop could include ‘customs clearance sites’ on both sides of the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. However, Mr Johnson has rejected the claims and leaked proposals. Speaking to BBC Breakfast on Tuesday, the PM said the leaked proposals were  “confused” and “not right”.

The EU has repeatedly called on the UK to find a workable solution to the backstop issue. The backstop issue has been a large sticking point in Brexit negotiations and the EU has so far said that no workable proposals have been submitted.

The news comes in the middle of the Conservative Party conference, where the government has made various policy announcements, including raising the National Living Wage and putting investment into the UK’s transport network.
