‘No longer a climate conference’ – COP26 criticised by Greta Thunberg

Young climate activist Greta Thunberg has described the COP26 Climate Summit as “the most excluding COP ever”.

What did Greta Thunberg say?

In a tweet on Thursday, Thunberg said;

“#COP26 has been named the must excluding COP ever. This is no longer a climate conference. This is a Global North greenwash festival. A two week celebration of business as usual and blah blah blah.”

Thunberg, while in Glasgow, was not invited to speak at the summit, unlike previous UN events and despite young people leading calls for urgent actions to be taken to tackle the climate emergency.

What have others said?

The Chancellor of the UK Government, Rishi Sunak said on Thursday that COP meant different things to different people. Speaking at an event in Glasgow, Mr Sunak said;

 “(It) means something different for all of us but for me it’s about two things – preparing our economy and reassuring my kids that I’m doing what I can to save the tigers.”

“It is clearer than ever that this will need a collective effort with governments, financial institutions, businesses and people working together.”

COP26 has been seen by many as one of the last, if not the last chance to secure global cooperation to ensure the 1.5C climate target stays alive.
