More than one million young people have declared ending knife crime as a top priority for young people in the UK, as they voted in the UK Youth Parliament’s ‘Make Your Mark’ consultation.
The Make Your Mark consultation, which is the biggest annual referendum of teenagers in the UK, asked young people to choose which issue they felt was a priority. The consultation is run by the British Youth Council with 1,111,580 young people take part. The UK Youth Parliament’s website states that this makes the consultation “one of the largest youth consultations of its kind in UK history, with nearly 1 in 5 of all young people aged 11-18 taking part.”
Each of the top five issues in the poll will be debated in the UK Youth Parliament on Friday 9 November.
The five top issues voted for by young people include;
- Putting an end to knife crime
- Improved mental health support
- Equal pay and equal work for young people
- Tackling homelessness
- Votes for 16 and 17-year-olds.
The debate will be concluded with a vote on the Youth Parliament’s top campaigning issue for the year.
