The Labour Minister of Japan, Takumi Nemoto has announced his belief that enforcing dress codes such as high heels at work is a necessity.
Nemoto announced the view in a statement last week. This came after the recently popular #KuToo movement in Japan, calling the government to stop companies from demanding women workers to wear high heels to work. As reported by CNBC, the movement has garnered much attention with opposition lawmakers like Kanako Otsuji, stating that the practice of wearing high heels to work is “outdated”. In addition, the petition that was submitted to the government regarding the issue has gained more than 18,000 signatures.
The movement itself was started by writer and author Yuki Ishikawa, who expresses her frustration of the practice on her social media account. From then on, the movement started to gain traction among the Japanese public with some men even joining on the movement by trying to wear heels to work, according to the Japan Times.
