Sajid Javid appointed by PM as new Health Secretary

Sajid Javid has been appointed as the new Health Secretary, following the resignation of Matt Hancock earlier on Saturday.

Sajid Javid previously served as Chancellor under Johnson’s government, until he was replaced by Rishi Sunak in February last year. Mr Javid’s resignation in February 2020 is believed to have been triggered following a disagreement with the Prime Minister’s then-chief adviser, Dominic Cummings.

Mr Javid has also served as the Home Secretary, Housing Secretary and Culture Secretary under previous governments.

Javid, 51, has been the Member of Parliament for Bromsgrove since May 2010.

Matt Hancock resigned as Health Secretary on Saturday after he admitted that he had breached the government’s coronavirus rules on social distancing by kissing a colleague in his Whitehall Office.
