Backbench veteran Labour MP Frank Field quit the Labour Whip on Thursday in light of the party’s antisemitism row.
Mr Field has blamed the Labour party for breeding a “culture of intolerance, nastiness and intimidation”. He has stated that the party is moving towards becoming a “force for antisemitism in British politics.”
The MP lost a confidence vote in the Labour Whip due to his support for Brexit.
Labour party leader Jeremy Corbyn has also apologised for causing feelings of antisemitism.
A spokesperson from the Labour party stated:
“Jeremy Corbyn thanks Frank Field for his service to the Labour Party.”
Whilst other members of the party believe that Frank Field “has been looking for an excuse to resign for some time.”
Despite the fact that he quit the Labour whip in Parliament, Field has stated that he would still hold his position as a party member.
However, the Labour party has said that he should not be able to resign from the whip and still maintain his membership of the Labour party.
In an interview with BBC Radio 4 on Friday, Field said that he aims to set up a by-election where he would stand as a candidate for the party’s leadership. And that if he cannot pursue that, he would remain as an independent member of the Labour party.
