Extinction Rebellion activists targetted the London Underground during rush hour on Thursday, with protestors climbing the roof of underground trains.
Climate change protesters climbed on top of trains at Stratford, Shadwell and Canning Town, resulting in minor delays and the partial suspension of the Jubilee Line and Dockland Light Railway.
At Canning Town Station in East London, commuters were seen pulling two campaigners off the top of a train after they had revealed a banner saying, “Business as usual = death”.
British Transport Police (BTP) said that four protestors have been arrested. In a statement, BTP said,
“We continue to urge protesters to not target the London Underground network. This is dangerous, not only for protesters but for commuters.
“We have increased our patrols on the London Underground and at other rail hubs throughout London.”
Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan condemned the protests on Thursday, tweeting “I strongly condemn the Extinction Rebellion protestors who have targeted the London Underground and DLR this morning.”

Some have questioned the targetting of London’s public transport system – the tube is generally low carbon and efficient compared to some other transport methods.
Extinction Rebellion have said the protests and disruption it caused was “necessary to highlight the emergency”.
