At midday on Tuesday, the Limmat River in Zurich was dyed fluorescent green by environmental activists from Extinction Rebellion. The river was dyed in an act of protest regarding, as the group state, the “impending collapse of the (global) ecosystem.”
The river, in Switzerland’s largest city, was in large areas converted to the eye-catching bright green.

Several protesters entered the river too and floated face-up down the river motionless.
The Zurich branch of Extinction Rebellion posted on their Facebook page confirming they had been responsible for colouring the river. The group stated, in the post, that they wanted to draw attention to “the toxic system in which we are located.”
They also added that the dye “has the toxicity of salt and does not hurt animals and the environment.”
Based on initial findings, the city police have said there was no danger to the public. Reportedly, the police are investigating the incident after the potential violation of the water protection act.
Extinction Rebellion has staged many protests across the globe “in an attempt to halt mass extinction and minimise the risk of social collapse.” The group use methods of non-violent civil disobedience.
The activists are expected to stage multiple protests across Switzerland over the next couple of weeks, in locations such as Luzern, Lausanne and Geneva.
