The deadline to register to vote for the UK local elections 2024 is at 23:59 on 16 April 2024. What though are the elections, and how can you register?
The Elections
On 2 May 2024 there will be the opportunity to vote in the following elections:
- local government elections in England
- local authority mayoral elections
- combined authority mayoral elections
- elections for the Mayor of London and the London Assembly
- parish council elections in England
- elections in England and Wales for Police and Crime Commissioners
The elections are different to the General Election, which is expected to happen later in 2024. The elections do though give an important opportunity to have your say on a whole range of topics that impact your local area.
How do I vote?
In order to vote on 2 May 2024, you’ll need to be registered to vote by 23:59 on Tuesday 16 April 2024. You need to be 18 or over to vote in England, but you can register to vote from age 16. You can find out if you’re eligible to vote here.
On voting day, you can vote at your local polling station – you’ll need to take photo ID in order to vote. You can usually expect to receive a polling card through the post ahead of polling day with information on how to vote. If you can’t vote on the day, you can apply for a postal or proxy vote.
How do I register to vote?
Registering to vote is simple and usually takes 5 minutes.
You only need to register once, not for every election – though you’ll need to register again if you change your name, address or nationality.
You can register to vote online at gov.uk/register-to-vote.
