An impromptu Facebook group consisting of engineers and medical researchers have together designed and produced an open-source ventilator partly using 3D-printed materials, all in just a matter of seven days.
In a superb example of what can be achieved when working together in times of need, the group, started by entrepreneurs, has attracted participation from over 300 engineers, researchers and medical professionals who have now built a ventilator prototype.
Ventilators are among other needed medical equipment but are in low supply during the current COVID-19 pandemic.
The ventilator prototype is now entering a validation process for use in Ireland, and it is hoped that this could pave the way for similar developments in other countries. The group behind the prototype are now working on creating other medical equipment including masks and sanitisers for front-line healthcare workers.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, many other entrepreneurs and firms have been playing their part to help provide vital equipment and supplies to the medical sector. Brewdog, a brewery based in Scotland has been creating hand-sanitizer, called ‘Punk Sanitiser’ for front-line medical staff. Their first batch of the product was delivered to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary’s Intensive Care Unit, which had run out of hand sanitizer amid the Coronavirus pandemic.
Deeside Distillery is also among other firms to have announced their intention to transform surplus spirits into hand sanitiser for primary care providers and medical centres.
