Justin Trudeau has been called on to resign following accusations of corruption involving engineering firm SNC-Lavalin.
Behind smoke and mirrors and moral camouflage stands someone we once saw as the epitome of pure and progressive politics, an avid feminist and embracer of diversity. A picture-perfect sweetheart who prompted an inquiry into murders of Indigenous women and opened immigration applications to extended family members to welcome unification. All for what? Because he cares? Behind all this stands Justin Trudeau.
There have been calls for the Canadian PM to resign following accusations that he subjected former attorney general Jody Wilson-Raybould and her staff to an uninterrupted “campaign” over the handling of corruption charges against SNC-Lavalin, says The Guardian.
In other words, the PM and the senior members of his government tried to force Wilson-Raybould into curving prosecution of a leading Canadian engineering firm in a case involving corruption allegations in Libya – something well off his moral compass, right?
SNC-Lavalin is a Canadian firm providing engineering and construction services, who between 2001 and 2011, is accused of paying bribes into Libya to gain important contracts.
And if they are found guilty of such allegations, the company will be prohibited from bidding on federal projects for a decade, subsequently leaving many people out of work.
The company employs nearly 50,000 people worldwide.
So far, there have been resignations but not one has been his.
Jody Wilson-Raybould had to resign following her allegations of corruption against the Liberal government, which she has given compelling testimony for – with evidence containing meeting notes and emails.
The PM’s closest advisor and best friend, Gerald Butts, resigned along with Treasury Board president and senior minister, Jane Philpott, who said in her resignation letter that she could no longer proceed in Cabinet due to her lack of confidence in the Canadian government.
She said: “The evidence of efforts by politicians and/or officials to pressure the former Attorney General to intervene in the criminal case involving SNC-Lavalin, and the evidence as to the content of those efforts have raised serious concerns for me,”
Of course, the former attorney general had to resign, but sacking off your own best mate to protest your innocence is going a bit far. Maybe, this reveals more about Trudeau’s character than we thought we knew before.
Calling for his resignation and a police investigation is Canadian Conservative Party leader, Andrew Scheer, who said at a news conference that Philpott’s resignation was demonstrative of “a government in total chaos”.
Now, as the investigation enters its seventh week, the Canadian government is waiting to hear more detrimental evidence against them and what’s more – an election is only seven months away from happening.
It is unclear as to what Trudeau’s next move will be, but with the prime minister denying any connection to the corruption and Raybould-Wilson’s subsequent demotion and resignation – it seems he is still playing the goody-goody façade.
For someone who was once so popular among the people for his seemingly kind and fair character, he is now watching those closest to him distance themselves away from a person they no longer recognise.
