The leader of the House of Commons, Andrea Leadsom, has confirmed that MPs will have their week off in February cancelled in order to help deal with the legislation accompanying Brexit that needs passing before exit day.
As Brexit gets closer and the way in which it will go forward remains unclear, the Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt has admitted that the day on which Brexit occurs may have to be delayed.
He told Radio 4’s Today programme that: “It is true that if we ended up approving a deal in the days before the 29 March, then we might need some extra time to pass critical legislation. But if we are able to make progress sooner then that might not be necessary.”
In order to help counter this, the Leader of the House announced to her colleagues today that the recess would be cancelled.
Westminster was originally due to break from the 14th to the 25th of February.
In light of the sheer amount of legislation it was decided that the motion to confirm this would not be brought forward, speaking to the Commons today (Thursday) Ms. Leadsom said:
“I realise that this is short notice for colleagues and house staff but I do think our constituents will expect that the house is able to continue to make progress at this important time.”
