Boris Johnson has reached a deal on Brexit with the European Union.
The announcement came on Thursday morning, on the same day of the start of the EU Summit. UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson tweeted “We’ve got a great new deal that takes back control — now Parliament should get Brexit done on Saturday so we can move on to other priorities like the cost of living, the NHS, violent crime and our environment #GetBrexitDone #TakeBackControl”
The deal was approved by EU leaders on Thursday afternoon and will now be brought back to the UK Parliament for a vote on Saturday.
However, it is unknown whether the deal will be able to pass. The DUP has indicated that it will not support the new agreement and there is also likely to be heavy opposition from other parties including Labour, the SNP and the Liberal Democrats.
Jean-Claude Juncker has indicated that no extension will be granted by the EU if the deal is voted down – however, President of the European Commission Donald Tusk said he would consult member states in the event of an extension being requested before such a decision may be made.
