Boris Johnson to divorce wife after 25 years of marriage

Ex Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson has confirmed that he and his wife, Marina Wheeler, have separated and are planning a divorce.

Wheeler and Johnson both released a statement together which stated that they have begun their divorce process after 25 years of marriage.

The couple also said that this decision was made a few months ago.

“Several months ago, after 25 years of marriage, we decided it was in our best interests to separate. We have subsequently agreed to divorce and that process is under way. As friends we will continue to support our four children in the years ahead. We will not be commenting further.”

This statement comes after the Sun newspaper discovered the news of their separation and that they were not living together. This also followed widespread speculation of Mr Johnson having an extra marital affair.

Ms Wheeler is a lawyer who specialises in human rights and became Queen’s Counsel in 2016. His marriage to Wheeler was his second marriage.

His first marriage was a short lived one with Allegra Mostyn-Owen who he had met at university.

A Tory MP stated that the divorce and the speculation surrounding it will do very little to harm his career, but may perhaps hinder his chances of becoming leader of the Conservatives.

“It’s all priced in because I don’t think any of his buffoonery will surprise anyone… He’s got a track record of affairs and dalliances, which is well known… Ultimately it’s likely to be moot because I don’t think he will get through to the final two in a leadership contest anyway,” said the MP.
