Boris Johnson and Carrie Symonds announce birth of baby boy

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his fiancee Carrie Symonds have announced the birth of a “healthy baby boy at a London hospital earlier this morning”.

Both the mother and baby are doing very well, their spokeswoman said.

The couple announced at the end of February this year that Ms Symonds was expecting a child and that they had got engaged.

Mr Johnson only returned to work in Downing Street on Monday, having spent time in intensive care battling the COVID-19 Coronavirus. It is understood that the Prime Minister will not take part in today’s Prime Minister’s Questions in the House of Commons and that Dominic Raab will stand in his place.

Messages of congratulations have started to flow in. Health Secretary Matt Hancock tweeted, “So thrilled for Boris and Carrie. Wonderful to have a moment of unalloyed joy!” while the Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer tweeted, “Wonderful news. Many congratulations to Boris Johnson and Carrie Symonds.”
