Maya obtained a first-class degree in law and media (with a focus on environmental law, sustainable development and media freedom) from the University of Sussex. She was also awarded her university's environmental law award for "exceptional academic performance" and completed a mini-pupillage with environmental law chambers Francis Taylor Building. Originally from Brazil and having lived in Peru for several years, she is fluent in Portuguese, Spanish and English. She is a strong advocate for environmental and human rights, as demonstrated by the multiple internships she completed with organisations including BPEC, Regions4, and Breathe in Brighton.
