Power companies are being required to cough up tens of millions of pounds in compensation to households left without power because of damage from Storm Arwen.
Almost a million people were left without power across Britain in the wake of Storm Arwen, the majority being in Scotland and Northern England. At least 4,000 people went 10 days without power, and some of those were left without power for a whole 12 days.
Storm Arwen resulted in some supply lines for gas and electricity being knocked out, in places by 100mph winds, snow and heavy rain.
Each household that lost power because of the storm will be able to claim £70 for the first 48 hours they were without power, and £70 for every 12 hours that passed after that before power was restored. British energy market regulator, Ofgem, removed the compensation cap of £700, for compensation related to Storm Arwen, meaning that some households could be receiving around £1,500 each.
Some claimants have started receiving compensation, with the regulator telling companies to make payments as swiftly as possible.
