Twitter users celebrate 10 years of Ed Balls Day

It started off in 2011 when he accidentally tweeted out his own name…

Today is the 10th anniversary of Ed Balls day, celebrating the moment when the then Shadow Chancellor tweeted out his name on 28 April 2011.

Mr Balls had typed his own name into Twitter, trying to search for an article about himself but inadvertently tweeted out his own name. Ever since Twitter users have celebrated the gaffe on April 28, and Mr Balls has himself joined the celebrations in recent years.

Serving as the MP for Normanton from 2005 to 2010, and MP for Morley and Outwood from 2010 to 2015, Mr Balls has also appeared in multiple TV shows and documentaries, notably starring in Strictly Come Dancing in 2016.

They say a week is a long time in politics, making a decade seem like forever – despite this, people still the joke funny 10 years on. Amongst all the other news, Ed Balls Day still found its way to the top of many people’s timelines this year and looks likely to continue to do so for years to come.
