France lockdown measures extended to May 11

French President Emmanuel Macron has announced the extension of nationwide lockdown measures in France until May 11 amid the Coronavirus pandemic.

President Macron announced the extension of the lockdown, which began on March 17, during a live television address on Monday. Under French lockdown measures, people can only leave their homes to travel to and from work if they can’t work from home, to buy essential supplies, to help others or to get brief exercise.

Mr Macron paid tribute to the efforts made by people across the country during the lockdown but said that more still needed to be done. President Macron said;

“We must therefore continue our efforts and continue to apply the rules. The more they are respected, the more they will save lives. That’s why the strictest lockdown must still carry on. Until Monday 11th May. During that period it’s the only way to act effectively”

A number of European countries have already extended their Coronavirus lockdown measures, with others expected to do so in the coming days.

According to latest figures, 14,393 people are confirmed to have died after contracting COVID-19 in France.
