A consultant working in Derby and Burton hospitals has died after testing positive for COVID-19, becoming the first frontline worker part of NHS England to die in the response to the Coronavirus.
In a statement, NHS England said Amged El-Hawrani, aged 55, died on Saturday evening at Leicester Royal Infirmary.
Mr El-Hawrani was an ear, nose and throat specialist.
Gavin Boyle, the chief executive at University Hospitals of Derby and Burton said;
“I want to pay tribute to Mr Amged El-Hawrani, who has sadly passed away.
“Mr El-Hawrani was known for his dedication and commitment to his patients. He had also raised funds for the hospitals, including climbing in the Himalayas with a group of friends some years ago. The whole UHDB family are desperately saddened at losing Amged who was such a valued and much loved colleague.
“On behalf of everyone here at UHDB, including our patients and the communities we serve, I would like to offer our sincere condolences to his family.”
As of 9am on Sunday, 19,522 people have tested positive for the virus in the UK. Of those, 1,228 have sadly died.
Speaking during Sunday’s Coronavirus Press Conference from Downing Street, Dr Jenny Harries, the Deputy Chief Medical Officer said, “We do have some new guidance coming out for colleagues in the NHS shortly, and I hope this will support them in their work in the frontline.”
