Nation comes together to show support for NHS workers

The UK came together on Thursday night to show its support for workers in the National Health Service amid the COVID-19 Coronavirus pandemic.

People from across the country stood on their doorsteps and at their windows, clapping at 8pm to show their appreciation for NHS workers. Scenes of people clapping to say ‘thank you’ were broadcast on TV and radio, whilst being streamed widely on social media.

Music was also reported in some areas, with some clapping while listening to Tina Turner’s ‘Simply the Best’. Others banged saucepan lids and bin lids together to make clapping noises, showing their appreciation for NHS staff.

Some neighbours also talked to each other from a distance for the first time in days in many neighbourhoods amid the new lockdown rules in the UK.

Boris Johnson, Jeremy Corbyn, Rishi Sunak and members of the Royal Family were among famous faces clapping at the same time as many other citizens throughout the country. Key monuments were also lit up with messages of support for the NHS.

The show of support was part of a campaign organised and spread on social media through the hashtag #ClapForOurCarers. It follows similar shows of support for healthcare workers in Italy and other countries around the world amid these unprecedented and difficult times.

Thank you to everyone working in the NHS at this difficult time and always. ?
