US President Donald Trump acquitted in impeachment trial

US President Donald Trump has been acquitted by the Senate of obstructing Congress and abusing the power of his office as president.

In December 2019, Mr Trump became only the third president in US history to be impeached. The Articles of Impeachment read ‘That Donald J. Trump, President of the United States, is impeached for high crimes and misdemeanours.’

The vote in the Senate on Wednesday brought to an end Mr Trump’s impeachment trial and sees him remain in office. Mr Trump’s impeachment still stands, but he has been cleared of an abuse of power and obstruction of Congress that he was accused of.

Mr Trump has said that he will make a statement tomorrow “to discuss our country’s victory on the impeachment hoax”. The President has long denied any wrongdoing and has repeatedly referred to the impeachment process as a ‘witch-hunt’.
