European Council President Donald Tusk has dismissed Boris Johnson’s call to scrap the backstop.
On Monday, the UK Prime Minister wrote to Mr Tusk, saying the backstop is “anti-democratic and inconsistent with the sovereignty of the UK”.
In a tweet, Mr Tusk has said ;
“The backstop is an insurance to avoid a hard border on the island of Ireland unless and until an alternative is found. Those against the backstop and not proposing realistic alternatives in fact support reestablishing a border. Even if they do not admit it.”
The backstop issue has long been a sticking point in Brexit negotiations. Brussels has consistently rejected calls to scrap the backstop and this position has been maintained in Mr Tusk’s latest tweet above.
