MP Chris Davies loses seat in recall petition, triggering by-election

Conservative MP Chris Davies has been unseated by a petition, triggering a by-election in the Brecon and Radnorshire constituency.

Mr Davies has lost his seat in Parliament after 19% of registered voters in his constituency signed a recall petition, which was started after he was convicted over fake expenses claims. He pleaded guilty earlier this year to submitting two false invoices for landscape photographs, thought to be purchased to decorate his office. Mr Davies was fined £1,500, ordered to pay £2,500 towards legal costs and also told to carry out community service.

Chris Davies is the second MP to be successfully unseated by the recall petition. Fiona Onasanya became the first MP to be ousted by recall rules, after she was convicted of lying over a speeding offence.

Mr Davies had been the MP for the Welsh seat since the 2015 general election, winning a second sizable majority of over 8,000 in the 2017 snap election. The Brexit Party, and other parties have announced they plan to contest the seat.
