A petition to recall Independent MP Fiona Onasanya from Parliament has secured the required number of signatures (more than 10% of registered voters) in her Peterborough constituency to force a by-election.
19,261 people signed the petition to recall Ms Onasanya from Parliament.
In December 2018, the former Labour MP was found guilty of perverting the course of justice following a retrial. The MP had lied repeatedly to police in an attempt to avoid a speeding charge.
Peterborough City Council confirmed the by-election, saying “the petition is successful and the Peterborough parliamentary seat is now vacant”.
Ms Onasanya refused to stand down from her seat in Parliament after serving 28 days of a three-month jail term for speeding. She has now lost her seat in Parliament. Ms Onasanya could stand again in the by-election but it would be expected that she would not be able to regain her seat.
