A survey has found that householders could be seeing the price of their council tax bill jump by 4.5% in 2019-20.
The Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (Cipfa) said this was the second highest rise in a decade, with bills in some regions reaching £1,800, according to research.
The North East looks set to feel the worst effects of the rises, with Band D bills rising by an average of £86 according to the Cipfa survey. In comparison, the East and London areas are likely to see the bills up by around £71.
The rises come as local government authorities have been struggling to provide services in some areas due to large funding cuts.
Funding cuts to the police have been criticised in recent days amid an increase in violence and knife crime in England.
Following the Cipa survey, a spokesman for the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government said: “Councils, not central government, are responsible for managing their own resources.”
