Germany is considering possibilities to block the Chinese technology giant Huawei from its 5G mobile phone network, according to reports.
To do so, Berlin is trying to find stricter security requirements which may prevent Huawei products of being usable in its 5G phone network, which is the next generation of mobile infrastructure after 3 and 4G.
Not only Germany, but also, many other countries have countered against Huawei’s involvement in their 5G networks due to security concerns.
Huawei, located in Shenzen, China, is one of the world’s largest telecom equipment producers. However, it has struggled with resistance from foreign governments as they believe that the firm’s technology can be used for surveillance purposes.
The firm has denied such claims.
In a statement, Huawei said that there is “no rational reason why it should be excluded from building 5G infrastructure in Germany, or indeed in any country in the world.”
Germany’s interior ministry had previously stated that it is against banning any suppliers from its 5G network. Yet, it may implement stricter security requirements and other techniques to exclude Huawei.
Such step could bring berlin in line with other Western countries.
The United States, Australia and New Zealand have all obstructed local firms from using Huawei to supply its technology for 5G mobile networks.
While the United Kingdom has indicated concerns with the Chinese company, Canada has also been reviewing its relationship with the technology giant.
On Thursday, China’s ambassador to Canada Lu Shaye warned of “repercussions” if Canada banned the company from its 5G network.
Canada and China have been conflicted in a diplomatic struggle as a court in China sentenced a Canadian to death for drug smuggling this month – a ruling which came after Canada arrested Meng Wanzhou, a top official at Huawei.
The USA is also allegedly examining Huawei for “stealing trade secrets” from American businesses, and Washington has accused Huawei of disregarding sanctions by lying about its business in Iran.
