Dominic Raab resigns as Brexit Secretary

The Brexit Secretary, Dominic Raab, has resigned.

Mr Raab said on Thursday morning that he could not ‘in good conscience’ support the draft Brexit deal. His resignation comes after Theresa May met with her cabinet for five hours on Wednesday to get their support on the draft Brexit withdrawal agreement.

In his resignation letter to the prime minister, Raab said he was concerned about the Northern Ireland border issue saying that the proposed ‘backstop’ guarantee for avoiding a hard border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland represented  “a very real threat to the integrity of the United Kingdom$.

Raab is the second Brexit secretary to resign this year, after David Davis stepped down in July.

More ministers could resign after the cabinet was split by the Brexit draft Withdrawal Bill yesterday.
