Home Secretary hints at cash injection for the Metropolitan Police

Yesterday, the home secretary talked to Sky News about the rise in violence in London and went on to hint that there could be more funding for the Metropolitan Police in order to combat this.

These words come after five fatal stabbings have occurred in the capital over a period of seven days.

Sajid Javid told Sky News that he was “deeply worried” about the level of violence and knife crime in London.

He talked about conversations he had had with Philip Hammond, hinting that the Chancellor of the Exchequer had seemed sympathetic towards the Police and their need for funding.

He told Sky of the need for more police funding to cover multiple areas, at the time he was on a trip to Seattle to discuss tackling online child abuse with tech giants in the city:

“I welcome the commitment by the chancellor just a week ago to sit down with me and discuss what resource is needed for the police and we have a December settlement just a few weeks away so this is something that can be looked at very, very quickly.”

More money was found for the defence and health budgets this year.

After years of austerity, and the loss of around 20,000 officers since 2010, funding is needed by police forces around the country.
