A Turkish prosecutor has stated that Jamal Khashoggi was strangled as soon as he entered the consulate. This indicates that the killing was a premeditated attack and undermines the story put forward by the Saudi government. This gives some clarity to the events as there were conflicting accounts as to exactly what happened to the journalist upon entering the consulate in Istanbul.
A suicide bomb in the offices of Russia’s Federal Security Service has killed one person and injured a further three. It is believed that a 17-year-old male was carrying the device in his rucksack and detonated it shortly after entering the offices. A motive for the attack is of yet unclear; the FSB have come under serious scrutiny in recent months for a string of killings and attempted killings that they have been culpable for in recent months.
The United States have entered the discussion on the Yemen war, calling for a swift end to the fighting. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Defense Secretary Jim Mattis have both spoken about the matter; a war that has received relatively little political and media attention. The US and several western allies currently provide armaments to the Saudi’s, who are one of the conflict’s main combatants.
