Australian PM survives leadership challenge

Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has called for unity after he survived a challenge to his leadership by a senior government colleague.

The surprise leadership vote was initiated by Mr Turnbull himself who bidded to resolve speculation that his leadership may be under threat. The vote came after a recent revolt from conservative MPs over a key climate change policy. The plans disputed in the revolt have since been dropped.

Mr Turnbull won the vote 48-35, defeating Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton.

Following the result, Mr Turnbull told his colleagues, “It’s really important that we put our differences behind us and get on with the job of looking after Australians.”
