The UK Foreign Office has said it is “deeply concerned” by outbreaks of violence following the controversial election in Zimbabwe this week. Clashes have erupted since the election, with opposition leader Nelson Chamisa having vowed to challenge the result where President Emmerson Mnangagwa held onto his post. Protesters have taken to the streets of the Capital of Harare to accuse the Government of rigging the vote. The military has been dispersing protesters by using live rounds.
US President Donald Trump has lashed out at basketball star LeBron James. The LA Lakers player accused Trump of being divisive during an interview with CNN. The president attacked James by suggesting the interviewer ‘made LeBron look smart, which isn’t easy to do’. Trump then suggested he preferred LeBron’s rival Michael Jordan, attempting to hit a nerve with the player. The first lady, Melania Trump has joined a chorus of high profile individuals defending LeBron.
Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro survives an attempted assassination at the hands of a drone. Footage shows the president suddenly looking upwards and soldiers running as the reported attack occurred. Maduro was speaking at a military rally to mark the 81st anniversary of the nation’s military. Mr Maduro has blamed Colombia for the attack, however, they deny this and Mr Maduro has presented no evidence to suggest as such. Maduro was elected back in may to serve a sixth term as Venezuelan president, however, claims of rigging were rife following huge unpopularity in recent years.
