Justine Greening has proposed a second referendum on the issue of Brexit. Downing Street has rejected her proposal and said that it would not happen “in any circumstances”.
The former cabinet member said that the final decision on how to deal with Brexit should be in the hands of the people rather than politicians who are “deadlocked”. She said this in reference to Theresa May’s Chequers deal which was a 12 hour long meeting that took place recently.
Ms Greening heavily backed Remain during the referendum. Her suggestions included the ability to vote for three options: the Chequer’s deal, remaining in the EU or implementing Brexit without a deal.
To avoid a rebellion by Brexiteer MPs, the government has agreed to the customs bill amendments.
Mrs May and Jeremy Corbyn refused the second vote although some other Labour figures are backing the idea of a final vote on the exit deal.
Leave-backing conservative MP Sir Bernard Jenkin described Justine Greening’s idea of a second referendum as “a little ill-thought-out” however agreed with her on her view of the PM’s Chequer’s plan.
