Theresa May has met with Donald Tusk in Downing Street to discuss a trade deal after Brexit, following the question of how to avoid a hard border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland raising tensions.
Donald Tusk told Prime Minister May that he was “not happy” with her so-called Brexit “red line.”
Tusk’s comments have pointed at a meeting with high tensions. Tusk, who was late to the meeting, apologised, joking that his “transport was not frictionless” as parts of the UK have been hit by temperatures as low as -15C in recent days.
Tusk told May, “After your decision on no customs union and no single market it’s some kind of breakthrough and we can start our substantive negotiations immediately.” Tusk has warned that “friction is an inevitable side-effect” of the UK’s decision to leave the EU.
Theresa May is set to make a speech about her Brexit negotiating speech on Friday.
