Veteran US senator John McCain dies after battle with cancer

Veteran US Senator and former presidential candidate, John McCain has died at the age of 81. Mr McCain died at 4:28pm local time on Saturday, surrounded by his wife and their family, his office has said.

It is understood Mr McCain had chosen to end his medical treatment for brain cancer last week. It was revealed last year that he had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of the disease.

Tributes have been paid to the veteran US Senator, including by Barack Obama, who ran against him in the 2008 presidential election.

Mr Obama said that despite their differences, he and Mr McCain shared “a fidelity to something higher”,  quoting “the ideals for which generations of Americans and immigrants alike have fought, marched, and sacrificed”.
