Trump fires two senior officials who testified against him in impeachment trial

US President Donald Trump has fired two senior officials after senators cleared him in the impeachment case earlier this week.

In December 2019, Mr Trump became just the third US President in history to be impeached. The impeachment trial came to an end this week, as senators voted on Wednesday. Mr Trump was acquitted by the Senate of obstructing Congress and abusing the power of his office as president, allowing him to stay in the White House.

Gordon Sondland, the US envoy to the EU has said he "was advised today that the president intends to recall me effective immediately", while Director for European Affairs for the US National Security Council Lt Col Alexander Vindman was escorted from the White House just hours earlier.

Both individuals had testified against him at his impeachment trial. During the impeachment trial, Mr Sondland said there had been a quid pro quo (a favour granted in return for something) between Mr Trump and Ukraine, while Lt Col Vindman testified that he was 'concerned' about Mr Trump's 'improper' phone call with the Ukranian President last July.

The move may not come as a massive surprise, with the US President this week describing his impeachment as a 'witch-hunt' and a 'hoax', as he has done throughout the proceedings.
