Dame Karen Pierce to become UK ambassador to the US

Dame Karen Pierce is to become the first woman to hold the role of the UK ambassador to the US, according to the UK government.

Dame Karen, who is currently the UK's permanent representative to the United Nations, will replace Sir Kim Darroch after he resigned in 2019 following leaked emails which showed him describing the US President Donald Trump's administration as "clumsy and inept".

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab have congratulated Ms Pierce on the appointment. Mr Johnson tweeted on Friday, "I can think of no better person to drive forward our hugely important relationship with the United States at this time."

The ambassador role is likely to be of increased importance in managing relations over the coming months as the UK seeks to negotiate a post-Brexit trade deal with the United States. The UK is also currently in a dispute with the US over allowing Huawei technology to be used on their 5G network, something that the White House advised strongly against.

Responding to the announcement of her appoint, Dame Karen said;

"I am honoured to have been asked to represent the UK in the US. I think it is the UK's single most important relationship. There is a deep bond between Britain and the US, built on many pillars.

"We have a fantastic cross-government team across the US and I look forward to working with them to strengthen and even further deepen the special relationship between our two countries and peoples."

Dame Karen was the UK Ambassador to Afghanistan between May 2015 and February 2016. From 1992-1995, she was based in Washington D.C., serving as Private Secretary to the Ambassador.
