Universities to face eight days of strike action by UCU members

The University and College Union (UCU) has announced eight days of strikes to start at 60 UK universities later this month.

The announcement comes after UCU members recently backed strike action over disputes on pensions and also on pay and working conditions.

Eight days of strikes are expected to take place from 25 November to 4 December and they are expected to impact around 60 universities, and potentially more than a million students. A list of which universities are set to be affected can be found on the UCU website.

General Secretary of the UCU, Jo Grady said;

“The first wave of strikes will hit universities later this month unless the employers start talking to us seriously about how they are going to deal with rising pension costs and declining pay and conditions.”

“Universities can be in no doubt about the strength of feeling on these issues and we will be consulting branches whose desire to strike was frustrated by anti-union laws about reballoting.”

Students were affected by strikes last year, with some losing teaching hours and being assessed on untaught work.
