UK reports highest daily increase in COVID cases since March

The UK reported 6,238 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday – the highest daily number of reported cases since 25 March.

It comes after 5,274 cases of the virus were reported in the UK on Thursday, and between three and four thousand cases were reported each day in the previous 7-day period.

The rise in cases comes during the schools half-term holiday period, in which many people will be taking holidays and mixing in the hot weather. The increase in cases is also against a backdrop of concerns about the Delta (Indian) variant of COVID-19, which is now the dominant variant of coronavirus in the UK and thought to be more transmissible than earlier variants.

Meanwhile, 11 deaths within 28 days of a positive coronavirus test were reported on Friday, compared to 18 on Thursday.

According to official figures, the total number of people to have died in the UK within 28 days of a positive coronavirus test since the start of the pandemic is 127,823.
