Theresa May attended the EU summit in Brussels on Thursday where she faced a great deal of scrutiny over her planning of a post-Brexit deal.
Jean Claude Juncker, the president of the European Commission stated that the UK must once and for all decide what kind of Brexit they would like to have, referring to the numerous meetings and disagreements within Parliament on the issue over the past month.
When asked about the possibility of a no-deal Brexit Mr Juncker said that it seemed to be steering towards that direction based on the way proceedings have played out in the UK parliament. He stated that, “We are preparing for different scenarios…”.
He also added:
“I don’t have to lecture Theresa May, but I would like our British friends to make clear their positions.”
Irish prime minister Leo Varadkar stated that the last few months have seen no progress in Brexit negotiations.
“We did expect that we would make more progress, or any progress really, we expected there would be progress at this summit in June, like there was in March and December. And there hasn’t been. So I will be saying to Prime Minister May we all need to intensify our efforts now.” said Varadkar, stressing that a deal needed to be made.
Also, Theresa May seemed to have been ambushed on the way into the summit when she was presented with a Belgian football shirt by the Belgian prime minister, Charles Michael.
The football shirt had the number 10 at the back of it, referring to Belgium’s best football player Eden Hazard who would be playing against England at the World Cup on Thursday night.
