UK could refuse to foot Brexit bill, warns Raab

Britain could refuse to pay the Brexit bill if it does not get a trade deal, the new Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab has warned.

Mr Raab has said Britain will only pay its £39bn divorce bill on condition of the EU “fulfilling its side of the bargain”. The statement comes as the Brexit Secretary accuses the EU of “irresponsibly” ramping-up pressure in withdrawal negotiations.

The divorce settlement of £39 billion was agreed to by Theresa May in December, with some ministers suggesting it may only be paid if the UK came to a deal with the EU. However, after the agreement of the settlement, Chancellor Philip Hammond said that he found it “inconceivable” Britain would not pay the bill.

Do you think the UK would pay the divorce settlement in a no-deal situation? Comment your thoughts.
