Theresa May to face vote of no confidence

UK Prime Minister Theresa May will face a vote of confidence in her leadership this evening after the number of letters needed to trigger the vote was met.

Mrs May gave a statement outside Downing Street this morning in which she said “I will contest that vote with everything I have got.” The PM has claimed that a change in party leader could “put our country’s future at risk and create uncertainty when we can least afford it”. She said any new Prime Minister would either have to scrap or extend Article 50, which is the process allowing the UK to leave the European Union on 29 March 2019.

Conservative Party MPs will vote from 18:00 to 20:00 GMT this evening, and a result is expected about an hour later.

Today’s cabinet meeting has been cancelled, and the PM will no longer go to Dublin today, instead she will stay in London in an attempt to save her premiership.
