‘Significant step’ made in Brexit negotiations

The UK has secured a key concession from Brussels in Brexit negotiations today as a breakthrough deal was reached on the transition period. The Uk has won the right to sign trade deals with non-EU countries – however, it will not be able to do so until after the transition period ends.

It has been announced that a joint committee of representatives from both sides will be created to work on any disagreements for a full 21 months after Brexit day, which is due in March 2019.

The rights of EU citizens have also been confirmed. EU citizens who enter the UK during the transition period will have the same rights as those before Brexit day in March 2019.

Michel Barnier, a key EU official in the negotiations described the breakthrough achieved a s’significant; but said ‘a decisive step remains a step.’
